The new tariffs will last 150 days unless Congress extends them and are seen as a temporary step toward stable trade policy.

New import tariffs announced by United States President Donald Trump have taken effect, just days after the Supreme Court invalidated the majority of his earlier tariff policies.

Effective Tuesday, a 10 percent tariff is now imposed on all imported goods not covered by exemptions, as per a notice from U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Trump initially announced a temporary global tariff of 10 percent, later increasing it to 15 percent on Saturday, though the reasons for the initial lower rate remain unclear.

The collection of previous tariffs, which ranged from 10 to 50 percent, was halted following the Supreme Court’s ruling on Friday. The conservative-majority court declared that Trump had exceeded his authority by using a 1977 law to impose tariffs on individual countries, ruling six to three against his actions.

Despite the court’s decision, Trump defended the tariffs as justified measures to address the United States’ large trade deficits. The new tariffs are set to last for 150 days unless extended by Congress and are widely viewed as a temporary measure leading toward a more stable trade policy.
