COLOMBO: Pakistan cricket team head coach Mike Hesson expressed confidence in his squad ahead of their T20 World Cup Super-8 match against New Zealand, highlighting the team’s adaptability and depth.

Hesson on Team Performance and Conditions

“We have played good cricket and are adjusting well to the conditions,” Hesson said during a press conference. He praised Mark Chapman, noting his strong record against Pakistan.

Hesson emphasized that the match against New Zealand will be won with skill rather than psychological edge.

    Batting and Squad Strategy

The coach explained that Babar Azam was positioned in the middle order at number 4 to strengthen Pakistan’s lineup.

“We have plenty of options in our squad, and our top order is batting well,” he added.

“Babar Azam knows exactly where to play and his strike rate in the power play is below 200, which is not the role we need from him,” Hesson said.

The coach explained that after the Asia Cup, Babar was brought back for a specific role where his unique skills can be most effective.

“Sometimes other players can execute a role better, and we adjust accordingly,” Hesson added.

Saim Ayub has performed strongly at the top of the order in previous series and remains a key contributor.

    Bowling and Playing XI

Hesson lauded Salman Mirza for his impressive bowling. He noted that Premadasa Stadium offers helpful conditions for spinners. The coach confirmed that Pakistan will field its best playing XI for the encounter.

The remarks underline Pakistan’s preparation and tactical planning as they face New Zealand in a high-stakes T20 World Cup fixture.

“We have been working hard for six months and are ready for the Super 8s,” Hesson said.

He emphasized the importance of adjusting to local conditions: “It is necessary to adapt to the conditions.”

Hesson noted New Zealand’s experience in the subcontinent but added, “No team has an advantage based solely on past records.”

    Player Roles and Performance

Usman Tariq can be used effectively in both attack and defense. Mohammad Nawaz has shown excellent performance over the past year. Shadab Khan has also played well since returning to the squad.

“We have selected the best team for each match,” Hesson said.

    Addressing On-Field Incidents

Hesson clarified a recent incident: “Salman Ali Agha did not throw the bottle out of anger at me; he was upset after Nafay got out and was speaking to me at the time.”

Hesson’s remarks underline Pakistan’s tactical planning, flexibility in player roles, and focus on adapting to conditions as they prepare for the high-stakes clash against New Zealand.
