OpenAI has officially announced the retirement of several of its older artificial intelligence models, including GPT-4o, GPT-5, GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 Mini, and o4-mini. According to the company, these models will no longer be available starting Friday, marking a significant transition toward its newer AI systems.
The decision has drawn attention partly because GPT-4o had become especially popular among many users. While the removal of older technology is usually routine, this change has sparked strong reactions online.
Many users shared their disappointment on Reddit, saying the model felt more engaging and conversational compared to newer versions. For some, it had evolved beyond a simple tool and became something they interacted with regularly in their daily lives.
This is not the first time uncertainty has surrounded GPT-4o. When OpenAI previously introduced GPT-5, the model was temporarily removed, leading to complaints from users who felt the replacement lacked the same conversational warmth. Due to feedback, the company later restored GPT-4o, but the latest decision confirms its permanent retirement.
Experts have also raised concerns about the behavior of highly friendly AI systems. Some researchers warned that models like GPT-4o could become overly agreeable or flattering, a phenomenon known as AI sycophancy.
In such cases, AI may appear excessively supportive or accommodating, potentially reinforcing harmful or incorrect ideas instead of challenging them. These concerns contributed to OpenAI’s decision to explain the change through a detailed blog post outlining its long-term strategy.
In its statement, the company acknowledged that the move might frustrate some users but said retiring older models allows it to focus resources on improving newer technologies that serve the majority of users. According to OpenAI’s 2025 enterprise report, the platform has around 800 million weekly active users, and only about 0.1 percent regularly relied on GPT-4o for their tasks.
With the transition underway, users will now be directed toward the company’s latest AI systems, GPT-5.1 and GPT-5.2, which OpenAI says offer improved performance, safety features, and overall capabilities. While the change marks the end of a popular model, it also signals the company’s continued shift toward newer and more advanced AI development.
