Alfonso Ribeiro’s heartfelt goodbye to James Van Der Beek

There are moments in life so fragile and luminous that they linger long after they have passed. The quiet comfort of a familiar presence, the echo of shared laughter, the silent language between two hearts these are the gifts we seldom measure until they become memories.

When love meets farewell, time seems to pause, and even the smallest gesture a smile, a touch, a whispered word becomes sacred. In that tender space between holding on and letting go, the soul feels both immeasurable gratitude and indescribable pain.

It was within such a profoundly intimate farewell that Dancing with the Stars host Alfonso Ribeiro, 54, said goodbye to his dear friend James Van Der Beek, who passed away on February 11 at the age of 48.

On Thursday, February 12, Ribeiro shared a deeply moving photograph on Instagram, capturing the two lying side by side as he gently cradled the actor’s head a final moment suspended in love and brotherhood.

“This was taken by @vanderkimberly just moments before I said my last goodbye,” Ribeiro wrote, acknowledging Van Der Beek’s wife, Kimberly, who took the photograph. “My final memory was making him laugh one last time. I miss him already more than words can say.”

Kimberly Van Der Beek, who shared six children with the late actor Olivia 15, Annabel 12, Joshua13, Emilia  9½, Gwendolyn 7, and Jeremiah 4, announced his peaceful passing in an emotional Instagram statement the day prior. “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning,”

she wrote. “He faced his final chapter with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share about his wishes, his profound love for humanity, and his reverence for the sacredness of time. Those conversations will come. For now, we ask for gentle privacy as we mourn our cherished husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”

Later that day, Ribeiro revealed the depth of his bond with the family, sharing that he is the godfather to Van Der Beek’s daughter, Gwendolyn. In a heartfelt tribute, he expressed his devastation. “I am utterly broken by the loss of my brother and friend @vanderjames”.

he wrote. “I stood beside him throughout his relentless battle with cancer through the hopeful triumphs and the crushing setbacks. James and @vanderkimberly changed my life in ways I can never fully repay. His spirit will remain etched in my heart forever.”

Ribeiro vowed to stand steadfastly by the grieving family. “I will always be there for their children. Being Gwen’s ‘Goddie daddy’ is one of the most sacred roles of my life. I love you, James. I know a guardian angel now watches over me. Being able to say goodbye this weekend is something I will carry with me always. Rest peacefully, my brother.”

Van Der Beek was first diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer in 2023 after undergoing a precautionary colonoscopy prompted by subtle but concerning symptoms. In November 2024, he publicly disclosed his diagnosis, explaining that he had been privately confronting the illness with the unwavering support of his family.

Despite the gravity of the news, he maintained a hopeful outlook, describing the diagnosis as a “life redirect” that deepened his gratitude for his wife and children and sharpened his appreciation for the time he had.

In his final televised interview in December 2025, he reflected on how the illness transformed his perspective. He spoke candidly about embracing presence about learning to inhabit each moment fully rather than rushing toward the next.

Though the journey demanded extraordinary patience, resilience, and inner strength, he discovered a fortitude within himself he had never known before, meeting adversity with grace and quiet determination.
