In the realm of modern music mythology, few figures loom as large as Michael Jackson. Now, a cinematic tribute to the King of Pop is steadily taking shape, and anticipation is mounting across the entertainment world.

Lionsgate has unveiled the first behind-the-scenes glimpse of its forthcoming biographical drama, Michael, offering audiences an early and intimate look at one of the most highly anticipated music films of the decade.

With its theatrical release scheduled in the coming months, the studio has begun intensifying promotional efforts to build momentum around the ambitious production.

The newly released featurette centers on Jaafar Jackson, who has been cast to portray his late uncle. The footage captures moments from rehearsal sessions, revealing the rigorous preparation undertaken to embody the artistry, precision, and unmistakable stage presence that defined Michael Jackson’s career.

Viewers are offered a glimpse of Jaafar meticulously studying and recreating the legendary choreography synonymous with the global icon, underscoring the production’s evident commitment to authenticity.

Reflecting on his experience, Jaafar Jackson remarks in the clip that he has “felt that love for Michael every day on set” from both cast and crew.

His casting has generated considerable public interest, not least because of his familial connection to the late superstar, heightening expectations regarding how the film will depict Jackson’s extraordinary life and enduring cultural legacy.

Michael is set to chronicle pivotal chapters of the singer’s journey, tracing his ascent from prodigious beginnings to unprecedented global stardom. The film will explore the artistic innovation and cultural influence that established him as one of the most consequential entertainers in modern history.

Although a full-length trailer has yet to accompany the featurette, the release of behind-the-scenes footage signals an acceleration in promotional activity as the premiere approaches.

The project’s development dates back to November 2019, when Deadline Hollywood reported that producer Graham King had secured the rights to produce a film about Michael Jackson, with acclaimed screenwriter John Logan attached to craft the screenplay. At that stage, the project had not yet been aligned with a studio.

In February 2022, Lionsgate formally announced the film, confirming its acquisition of global distribution rights. Subsequently, in October 2023, it was revealed that Universal Pictures International would manage distribution outside the United States.

In July 2024, Tokyo-based Kino Films entered into an agreement with Lionsgate and GK Films to distribute the picture in Japan. Notably, the last theatrical feature centred on Jackson Michael Jackson’s This Is It (2009) had been distributed by Columbia Pictures, a sister company of Sony Music, though neither is involved in the present production.

In January 2023, Antoine Fuqua was announced as director, marking a significant step forward for the biopic. Casting commenced the same month under the supervision of casting director Kimberly Hardin, with Jaafar Jackson confirmed in the titular role.

Further casting developments followed in early 2024. Newcomer Juliano Krue Valdi was selected to portray a young Michael, while Colman Domingo and Nia Long were cast as Joe Jackson and Katherine Jackson respectively.

In February, Miles Teller was confirmed to play John Branca, Jackson’s long-time attorney, and additional actors portraying members of the Jackson 5 were announced shortly thereafter.

Principal photography began in January 2024, following delays attributed to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, and concluded in May of that year. Additional photography was undertaken in June 2025.

Michael is scheduled for release on 24 April 2026 in the United States through Lionsgate, with Universal Pictures overseeing international distribution.
