Eclipsa Audio support coming to Chrome & Android

Google and Samsung’s innovative open-source spatial audio format, Eclipsa Audio, is set to arrive on Chrome and Android. This cutting-edge format is designed to deliver immersive audio experiences to all users, beyond the confines of the professional movie or music industries.

Announced by Samsung earlier this year, Google has now revealed additional insights into Eclipsa Audio, which is based on the Immersive Audio Model and Formats (IAMF). This format, developed by Google, Samsung, and other members of the Alliance for Open Media (AOM), is licensed royalty-free through AOM, paving the way for accessible, spatial sound experiences for everyone.

For over five decades, spatial audio technologies have been reserved for industry specialists, but Eclipsa Audio aims to change that. By enabling anyone to create spatial audio files using free, easily accessible audio tools, this technology transforms how users can interact with sound.

To further its reach, Google is planning to release a free Eclipsa Audio plugin for the AVID Pro Tools Digital Audio Workstation in the spring. An open-source reference renderer is already available, offering standalone spatial audio playback capabilities.

Additionally, users can experiment with Eclipsa Audio files directly in their browsers through the Binaural Web Demo Application, making this innovative format even more accessible to creators and enthusiasts alike.
