Common factors that increase the risk of cancer

Cancer is a disease that can be treated successfully if it is diagnosed early, although its treatment can be very difficult. Doctors still cannot say exactly who will develop cancer, but research has identified several factors that increase the risk of the disease.

Age is considered the biggest risk factor. Many types of cancer are linked to aging, and nearly half of cancer patients are around 66 years old. However, cancer can occur at any age.

Chronic inflammation is another major factor. Inflammation is the body’s natural response to injury, but when it continues for a long time, it can damage DNA and increase the chances of cancer.

Dietary habits also play an important role. While no specific food has been proven to directly cause or prevent cancer, studies suggest that eating large amounts of ultra-processed foods may raise cancer risk. These foods include fast food, sweets, packaged snacks, instant noodles, sugary drinks and processed meats. High consumption of red meat has also been linked to cancer.

Alcohol use increases the risk of cancers of the mouth, throat, food pipe, liver and breast. The more alcohol a person drinks, the higher the risk becomes.

Obesity raises the risk of several cancers, including breast, bowel, kidney, pancreas and esophageal cancer. Maintaining a healthy weight can also help protect against heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure.

Hormones also affect cancer risk. An imbalance of estrogen, a hormone found in higher levels in women, can increase the risk of breast cancer.

A weak immune system makes it harder for the body to fight cancer. Research shows that people with weakened immunity face a higher risk of different cancers.

Certain diseases caused by viruses, bacteria and parasites can also increase cancer risk. These include hepatitis B and C, HIV, HPV, Epstein-Barr virus and Helicobacter pylori.

Too much exposure to sunlight raises the risk of skin cancer. This risk exists at all ages and can be reduced by limiting time in the sun, especially during midday and afternoon hours.

Smoking is one of the most dangerous causes of cancer. Tobacco contains many cancer-causing chemicals and increases the risk of not only lung cancer but also at least 12 other types, including cancers of the bladder, stomach, mouth, throat and kidneys.
