OpenAI has launched Prism, an innovative AI-driven platform poised to transform the landscape of scientific research, akin to the impact that coding agents like Claude Code and OpenAI’s own Codex have had on software development.
Built upon the recently acquired cloud-based LaTeX platform Crixet, Prism addresses one of academia’s long-standing inefficiencies.
While LaTeX remains the cornerstone of scientific typesetting, tasks such as diagram generation and complex formatting can be labor-intensive. Prism streamlines these processes, integrating AI intelligence directly into researchers’ workflows.
Replacing Crixet’s Chirp agent, Prism now incorporates GPT-5.2 Thinking, empowering users not only to format documents but also to intelligently source relevant literature and auto-generate bibliographies.
During a live demonstration, OpenAI showcased Prism’s ability to curate references, draft lesson plans for graduate courses, and produce problem sets, underscoring its capacity to minimize repetitive tasks and enhance productivity.
Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s VP of Science, emphasized that Prism is designed to augment human oversight rather than replace it. “AI accelerates research without compromising accountability,” he said, highlighting the importance of transparency and control in academic workflows.
Prism is immediately available to all personal ChatGPT users, supporting unlimited projects and collaborators, with plans to expand access to ChatGPT Business, Team, Enterprise, and Education accounts. The Crixet platform will be fully integrated into Prism, ending its standalone operation.
By combining advanced AI reasoning with domain-specific tools, OpenAI’s Prism represents a bold step toward an era where research becomes faster, smarter, and more collaborative.
