Simple ways to control weight gain during winter

As winter begins, many people notice weight gain, tighter clothes, and an increase on the weighing scale.

Health experts say this is a common issue during the colder months due to changes in weather, eating habits, and daily routines. However, a few simple lifestyle changes can help control this problem.

Experts explain that cold weather makes the body use more energy to stay warm, which can increase hunger. Shorter days and less sunlight often cause tiredness and low energy, leading people to eat more than usual.

During winter, many prefer warm and oily foods such as parathas, halwa, nihari, and other traditional meals. While these foods give quick energy, eating them too often can lead to weight gain.

Another major reason is reduced physical activity. Cold temperatures discourage outdoor exercise, and when movement decreases, extra calories are stored in the body. People also tend to drink less water in winter because they do not feel very thirsty. Doctors say this can slow metabolism and may cause people to mistake thirst for hunger, resulting in overeating.

Sleep habits can also be disturbed in winter. Late nights and waking up late can affect hormones that control appetite, making it harder to manage food intake.

To prevent weight gain, experts advise eating healthy, warm meals such as soups, vegetables, lentils, porridge, and steamed foods, while avoiding excessive fried and sweet items. Staying active is equally important, even if it means exercising indoors through stretching, yoga, or simple household movements.

Drinking enough fluids like lukewarm water, green tea, or herbal tea helps maintain metabolism. Keeping regular meal times, getting proper sleep, and managing stress through light activity or relaxation techniques can also support weight control.

Health experts stress that gaining weight in winter is not unavoidable. With mindful eating, regular movement, proper hydration, and good sleep, people can enjoy the winter season while maintaining a healthy weight.
