Slimming down monarchy was never something King Charles planned.
Royal biographer Robert Hardman revealed that while Charles saw monarchy evolving into a smaller working group, he never specifically called for a reduction in family members.
The Making of a King: King Charles III and the Modern Monarchy author told Marie Claire that “there’s always been a bit of mythology around this slimmed-down monarchy thing.”
He added that there’s no “evidence” surrounding that Charles “advocated that, or called for it, you won’t find any, because he never did.”
Hardman noted that Charles, unlike his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, envisioned fewer extended family members involved in royal duties.
“Basically, what people surmised, and was never denied, was that he looked at the monarchy when The Queen came to the throne in the fifties, and there were lots of cousins and uncles and aunts and people hanging around, and you had a trigenerational unit,” the royal expert stated.
It is worth mentioning that the royal family has naturally become smaller over recent years due to the departures of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and stepping back from the public life of Prince Andrew.
