Birmingham, UK: Residents of Birmingham and surrounding areas were left astonished as the sky took on an unusual pink hue during snowfall.

The rare sight was widely shared on social media, with some viewers comparing it to a spectacular sunset and others likening it to the Northern Lights.

According to a BBC report, the pink glow was actually caused by LED lights installed at St. Andrew’s Stadium, home of Birmingham City Football Club. Snowfall and thick cloud cover amplified the effect, reflecting the stadium, street, and building lights across the sky.

BBC explained that low clouds and snow act like mirrors, absorbing and reflecting artificial lights, allowing even purple or pink stadium lighting to spread across the horizon.

A Met Office spokesperson, Graham Madge, noted that blue light is scattered easily by tiny ice or water particles, whereas longer wavelengths like red and pink become more prominent, giving the sky its vivid color.

Birmingham City Football Club shared photos of the phenomenon on social media, captioning it:

“Pink sky at night, Blues delight.”

Experts emphasized that such scenes are not purely natural, but rather the result of a combination of weather conditions and artificial lighting, temporarily transforming the sky into a striking display of color.
