Syria will introduce a new national currency starting January 1, 2026, Central Bank governor Abdulkader Husarieh said, according to source.
Husarieh said that the move, announced in Decree No 293 of 2025, represents a new phase for Syria’s monetary and economic system. He added that the Central Bank will manage the schedule and locations for exchanging the current currency, with the process planned to be smooth and orderly.
Husarieh said that the details of how the exchange will work will be shared at a press conference to ensure transparency and clarity. He described the new currency as a symbol of Syria’s financial independence and as a step toward economic stability and growth.
Earlier this month, Husarieh said Syria is preparing to introduce a new currency in eight different notes and confirmed plans to remove two zeroes from them in an effort to restore confidence in the weakened pound, which was valued at 11,057 to the dollar on LSEG Workspace on Thursday, December 4.
