Morgan Rogers leads Aston Villa to shock win over Manchester United

BIRMINGHAM (United Kingdom): Aston Villa’s remarkable turnaround in the Premier League continued as Morgan Rogers scored a sensational brace to secure a 2-1 victory against Manchester United at Villa Park on Sunday.

The breakthrough came late in the first half when Rogers struck with precision to put Villa ahead. Moments later, Matheus Cunha leveled for United, but Rogers’ second goal in the 57th minute marking his sixth goal in six league appearances proved decisive, completing Villa’s 10th consecutive win across all competitions.

Under Unai Emery, Villa now sit third in the league, just three points behind leaders Arsenal and a single point shy of second-placed Manchester City, chasing their first English top-flight title since 1981.

The team’s seven consecutive league victories are their longest streak since the 1989-90 season, while their 10 straight wins in all competitions echo their best run since 1914.

This resurgence is especially remarkable considering Villa’s poor start to the season, accumulating only two points and scoring a solitary goal in their first five matches.

Emery has turned Villa Park into a fortress, with the team suffering only one home defeat in the Premier League this season fewer than any other club.

Manchester United, in seventh place, endured their second loss in 11 league games and remain winless in their last two matches, following Monday’s 4-4 draw against Bournemouth.

The blow was compounded by the halftime exit of captain Bruno Fernandes due to a hamstring injury, leaving manager Ruben Amorim without seven key players, including Harry Maguire, Matthijs de Ligt, Kobbie Mainoo, Casemiro, Amad Diallo, Bryan Mbeumo, and Noussair Mazraoui.

The first goal came from a beautifully orchestrated counter-attack in the 45th minute. John McGinn’s pinpoint pass released Rogers down the left flank, allowing the England midfielder to glide past Leny Yoro and curl the ball into the far corner.

United responded immediately, capitalizing on Matty Cash’s defensive lapse as Patrick Dorgu set up Cunha for a clinical finish.

Rogers’ second goal in the 57th minute showcased his predatory instincts. Pouncing on a loose ball inside the box, he slotted it past Senne Lammens to secure the lead.

Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez made crucial saves from Diogo Dalot and Dorgu to protect the advantage, while Cunha missed a clear chance to equalize.

Manchester United’s debutant Jack Fletcher, son of former player Darren Fletcher, could not prevent the defeat, as Villa’s composure and attacking prowess shone through.

The victory not only reinforces Aston Villa’s title ambitions but also highlights Emery’s tactical mastery and the team’s extraordinary revival this season.
