Pakistan’s experienced fast bowler Mohammad Abbas has signed a two-year contract with English county club Derbyshire, making him one of the most sought-after players in county cricket once again.

Abbas has previously represented Leicestershire, Hampshire, and Nottinghamshire, and played a key role in helping Nottinghamshire win the County Championship title recently. Following his impressive performances, Derbyshire secured his services for the upcoming seasons.

Although Derbyshire currently competes in County Championship Division Two, 35-year-old Abbas was convinced to join the club by Derbyshire’s Head of Cricket, Mickey Arthur, who has also coached him at the international level.

Abbas emphasized that his goal is not just to play a season in Division Two, but to help Derbyshire earn promotion to Division One. He expressed excitement at joining the club and working with Mickey Arthur again.

“Mickey Arthur is an excellent coach, and his vision for the future of the club impressed me greatly,” Abbas said. “I hope to play a role in turning near misses into victories and bring joy to the fans.”

Abbas also boasts an outstanding Test career, having taken 100 wickets. One of his career highlights came last year against South Africa, where he claimed six wickets for 54 runs. His success in English conditions is well-established, demonstrated through his performances for several county teams.

Mickey Arthur described Abbas’ signing as a major achievement for Derbyshire. “Despite stiff competition from Division One teams, we have signed one of the world’s best red-ball bowlers,” he said. “Abbas not only bowls with control and consistency but also brings invaluable experience to our young players.”

Mohammad Abbas will represent Derbyshire in the 2026 and 2027 county seasons.
