Siberians protest Roblox ban amid digital crackdown

In the Siberian city of Tomsk, dozens of residents braved freezing temperatures on Sunday to protest Russia’s ban on the US children’s gaming platform Roblox.

The demonstration highlighted growing public frustration with the government’s tightening grip on digital freedoms.

Russia’s communications watchdog, Roskomnadzor, blocked Roblox on December 3, claiming the platform contained “inappropriate content that can negatively affect the spiritual and moral development of children.” Yet, many young users circumvent the ban using VPNs and other tools, raising questions about the effectiveness of state-imposed digital restrictions.

Protesters carried hand-drawn placards reading: “Hands off Roblox” and “Roblox is the victim of the digital Iron Curtain.” Photos showed roughly 25 demonstrators standing in a circle in the snow, a stark illustration of popular dissent against the government’s policies.

Parents and educators have expressed concerns that Roblox exposes children to adult interactions and explicit content, while Russian officials insist the ban is necessary to protect the country from what they describe as the corrosive influence of Western culture.

Despite the ban, Roblox’s popularity persists, and the public’s frustration combined with youths’ workarounds underscores the ineffectiveness of Russia’s digital censorship and highlights growing unrest over government control of online spaces.
