ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has expressed strong condemnation of the recent attack on UN peacekeepers in Kadugli, Sudan, which claimed six Bangladeshi lives.
According to the Foreign Office statement expressed deep sorrow and condolences to the government and people of Bangladesh and extended Pakistan’s full solidarity with the families of the deceased peacekeepers.
It highlighted the vital role of UN peacekeepers worldwide in conflict prevention, civilian protection, and promoting peace, adding that Pakistan salutes their sacrifice for peace and stability.
Pakistan also called for an immediate investigation into the attack and urged that those responsible be brought to justice.
The Foreign Office confirmed that Pakistan will continue to work alongside UN Security Council members and the international community to ensure the protection and safety of peacekeepers.
Earlier, six Bangladeshi personnel serving with the United Nations Interim Security Force in Sudan (UNISFA) were killed in a drone attack in Sudan’s Kordofan region, UN officials confirmed.
The attack targeted a UN mission base, leaving six peacekeepers dead and several others injured, including four in critical condition. The injured personnel are also from Bangladesh.
Bangladesh’s acting head, Mohammad Yunus, condemned the incident and urged the United Nations to provide all possible emergency assistance to the affected personnel.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres also denounced the attack, calling such acts unjustifiable and potentially constituting war crimes.
The Sudanese army has attributed the attack to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), rebel militia involved in the ongoing civil conflict with government forces for over two years, which has already resulted in thousands of casualties. The RSF has not yet issued a response to the incident.
