As December begins, the northern hemisphere enters its peak meteor season. During this period, two major meteor showers appear one after the other one in December and the other at the start of the new year.
This year, the Geminid meteor shower will reach its peak on the night of December 13 and the early hours of December 14. Experts say that up to 150 bright meteors per hour may be visible, with the highest activity expected around 08:00 UTC.
According to astronomers, although the well known Perseid meteor shower appears every August, the December Geminids usually offer a far more spectacular display.
Why Are the Geminids Special?
The origin of the Geminids is an unusual space object known as 3200 Phaethon, which has characteristics of both an asteroid and a comet. Its elliptical orbit around the Sun intersects Earth’s orbital path, releasing debris along the way.
When Earth passes through this debris trail, these particles enter the atmosphere and turn into bright, colorful streaks across the sky.
The meteors appear to radiate from a point near the constellation Gemini, close to the star Castor, which is why they are called the Geminids. Their glow is intense, their colors vivid, and their speed relatively slow, making them easier to watch and photograph.
Will Moonlight Affect Visibility?
During the peak of the Geminids this year, the Moon will be in its waning crescent phase, only 26 percent illuminated. This means bright meteors will be clearly visible. The nights before and after the peak may also offer good viewing if the weather is clear.
Which Meteor Shower Comes Next?
On the night of January 2, 2026, the Quadrantid meteor shower will reach its peak. However, a full Moon on that date may reduce visibility, making this December’s Geminid shower the best opportunity for a clear meteor watching experience.
The next major meteor shower will occur in April 2026.
