Washington: The U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) on Monday forcefully rejected media reports claiming the agency had been shut down, calling the allegations “fake news” and insisting operations remain fully normal.
In a statement posted on its official X account, DOGE said, “The Reuters report on DOGE’s disbandment is fake news. Last week DOGE terminated 78 wasteful contracts, saving $335 million in budget.” The agency added that its regular Friday performance update would be released as scheduled.
Reports from Reuters and several international outlets earlier suggested that the department—previously described in media coverage as being led by Tesla CEO Elon Musk—had ceased operations. DOGE disputed the accuracy of those reports and reaffirmed its commitment to continuing what it describes as an aggressive government-reform agenda.
The department highlighted its recent move to eliminate 78 contracts deemed excessive or inefficient, claiming the cuts amounted to hundreds of millions in savings for taxpayers. Officials emphasized that this work would continue uninterrupted.
