BYD launches game-changing hybrid technology in Pakistan

As countries around the world move rapidly toward cleaner transportation, Pakistan is slowly but surely aligning with this global trend. Growing consumer interest and supportive government policies—like the New Energy Vehicle (NEV) policy—are driving the shift. Aimed at reducing carbon emissions and improving urban air quality, this policy has opened the door for electric mobility across the country.

Now, global automakers are paying attention, seeing Pakistan as the next big market for electric vehicles. Among the first to take a bold step is BYD (Build Your Dreams)—the world’s number one plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) brand.

Pakistan’s First PHEV Pickup Makes Its Debut:

BYD has introduced the BYD Shark 6, Pakistan’s first PHEV pickup truck. This vehicle isn’t just a new launch—it’s a statement. With a powerful hybrid system and rugged off-road capabilities, it aims to change the way Pakistan views hybrid driving.

At a recent workshop in Karachi, BYD Pakistan (under Mega Motor Company) brought together automotive experts, media professionals, and industry stakeholders to showcase its Super DM (Dual Mode) Plug-in Hybrid Technology. The Shark 6 took center stage as a symbol of innovation and performance.

What Makes BYD’s Super Hybrid Platform Unique?

Unlike traditional hybrids that mainly rely on a combustion engine, BYD’s Dual Mode (DM) system prioritizes electric driving. The petrol engine only kicks in when needed, acting as a range extender—meaning the vehicle behaves more like a full EV while still offering the backup of fuel for longer trips.

According to Lei Jian, Country Head of BYD Pakistan, this technology has been in development for over 20 years. “We launched the world’s first mass-produced PHEV in 2008,” he said. “Our platform is smart, efficient, and built to go the distance. The engine only works when necessary, giving drivers confidence on longer journeys.”

A Closer Look at the Technology:

The Shark 6 is powered by BYD’s Super DM Hybrid Platform, combining a large 29.58 kWh battery with a high-efficiency 1.5L Xiaoyun engine, which boasts a leading thermal efficiency of 46.06%. The vehicle produces an impressive 436 HP and 650 Nm of torque, giving it the edge as the fastest and most powerful pickup in Pakistan.

BYD also showcased its Blade Battery, known for safety, longevity, and thermal stability. Integrated into the Electric Hybrid System (EHS), it enables fast power delivery and instant torque, offering a smooth, EV-like driving experience.

    PHEVs: The Smarter Hybrid Choice:

Danish Khaliq, Vice President Sales and Strategy at BYD Pakistan, explained how PHEVs stand apart from conventional hybrids. “This isn’t about small steps—it’s a leap,” he said. “In PHEVs, the electric motor takes the lead, while the engine supports. That shift completely changes the driving experience, especially for urban users who want cleaner, more efficient options.”

Unlike traditional hybrids (HEVs), which depend on the petrol engine and recharge via braking or the engine itself, PHEVs can be plugged in and offer pure electric driving for extended ranges. That means better fuel economy, reduced emissions, and more flexibility for drivers.

Cleaner Cities and a Better Driving Experience:

In real-world conditions, the Shark 6 can cut tailpipe CO₂ emissions by up to 62%, a big deal for cities like Karachi and Lahore, where transport emissions heavily contribute to air pollution. The vehicle also appeals to outdoor enthusiasts with terrain modes like Mud, Snow, and Sand, ensuring confidence across all landscapes.

More Than Just a Vehicle—A New Mindset:

While the Shark 6 stole the spotlight at the workshop, the bigger message was clear: PHEVs can reshape Pakistan’s mobility future. They offer a smart transition for drivers looking to reduce their environmental impact without sacrificing performance or convenience.

“This isn’t just about launching a vehicle,” said one panelist. “It’s about introducing a mindset shift—a move toward cleaner, more intelligent mobility.”

What’s Next for BYD in Pakistan?

With plans to set up a local production plant, BYD is serious about its long-term commitment to Pakistan. As the company positions the country as a key regional market, the foundation is being laid for widespread adoption of plug-in hybrid vehicles.

If the Shark 6 is any indication, BYD isn’t just bringing a vehicle to Pakistan—it’s bringing a vision of the future.
