The old city of Al Balad, located in the port city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, holds a special significance in the country’s history as a vibrant part of the city, serving as the main port of the country.
This district, which was once famously known as the ‘Gateway to Arabia’, boasts a history spanning over 150 years and has been carefully preserved as a site of historical heritage.
In the past, during the Hajj pilgrimage, the residents of Al Balad would rent out their buildings to pilgrims, moving temporarily to Taif, making the area an important hub for travellers coming to perform this sacred journey.
Dr Imad Kashmiri, a representative of the Saudi Tourism Authority and an individual with a keen eye on Arab history, told Geo News that a strong wall was constructed around the city.
This wall later became a significant entrance for Muslims travelling to the holy cities of Makkah and Madina from all over the world.
This area was also home to many renowned business, academic, and commercial figures.
One of its most famous landmarks, the Nassif House, which was built in the 19th century and was once the home of King Abdul Aziz, continues to retain its former glory.
Furthermore, Abdullah Kashmiri, a tour guide, mentioned that these buildings, which are over 150 years old, were constructed from wood and stone in various designs.
Their unique architectural style makes these residential houses a center of attraction for tourists. Many important buildings have also been transformed into museums.
Additionally, the thriving bazaar adds to the city’s charm with the arrival of tourists.
Abdullah emphasised that Saudi Arabia boasts excellent tourist destinations beyond just religious tourism. With Vision 2030, the country encourages visitors to come and explore its beautiful and captivating tourist and historical sites.
