Indian fast bowler Mohammad Shami on Sunday bowled five wides in one over against Pakistan during the much-hyped Champions Trophy 2025 clash between the arch-rivals in Dubai.

Shami opened the attack for India and ended up bowling 11 deliveries in the first over. The right-arm pacer struggled to maintain his line as he bowled five wides on either side of the wicket.

As a result, Shami joined fellow pacers Irfan Pathan and Zaheer Khan, who had also bowled 11 deliveries in an over in 2006 and 2003, respectively.

Irfan had bowled 11 delivers during a 2006 match against the West Indies, whereas Zaheer had done so against Australia back in 2003.

Notably, all three instances occurred during the first over of the innings.

However, Shami’s woes didn’t end here as he presumably picked up an ankle injury in his third over and required medical attention.

Although, he managed to complete his said over and conceded only three runs he could not continue for the fourth and was consequently replaced by Hardik Pandya.

Earlier in the day, Pakistan won the toss and chose to bat first. However, despite a rather stable start, openers Babar Azam (23) and Imam-ul-Haq (10) fell cheaply with the former getting caught behind off Pandya while the latter was run out via a direct hit by Axar Patel.

When this story was filed, Pakistan were 81-2 in 11 overs with skipper Mohammad Rizwan (14*) and Saud Shakeel (21*) on the crease.
