As Pakistan and India gear up for their highly anticipated Champions Trophy clash in Dubai tomorrow, former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed has taken a nostalgic trip down memory lane, recalling his team’s historic 2017 triumph over India.

In a heartfelt account, Sarfaraz reminisced about the moment he lifted the ICC Champions Trophy, a feat that remains etched in his memory.

“I had just requested the boys to let me lift the trophy for a moment before everyone joined in. These cherished memories resurface every year when June 18 arrives,” he shared.

Reflecting on the journey to the title, Sarfaraz recalled the immense pressure of captaining Pakistan in his first-ever match against India as skipper on June 4, 2017.

Pakistan suffered a heavy 124-run defeat (DLS method) in their opening match but bounced back strongly despite challenges. Bad weather denied them practice before facing South Africa, yet they emerged victorious by 19 runs (DLS method) on June 7.

Momentum built as Pakistan stunned hosts England in the semi-final on June 14, securing an 8-wicket victory in Cardiff. Sarfaraz noted the overwhelming support Pakistan received in England, highlighting how the team did a lap of honor to acknowledge the fans.

The final on June 18 at The Oval remains one of the most iconic moments in Pakistan cricket history.

Recalling a conversation with New Zealand’s Tim Southee, Sarfaraz mentioned how Southee referred to the final as an “easy win” for Pakistan. Sarfaraz, however, countered, emphasizing that such victories are never easy and require immense effort and resilience.

He further reflected on the significance of such achievements for any cricketer, expressing gratitude for being part of history.

“Every player dreams of winning a title that is remembered for a lifetime,” he said.

Looking ahead, Sarfaraz expressed his excitement for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which will be hosted in Pakistan after 29 years. He highlighted the country’s preparations, stating that the grounds are in excellent shape and the nation is eagerly anticipating the tournament.

“We hope Pakistan will successfully defend their crown on home soil,” he added.

As Pakistan and India prepare for another fierce battle tomorrow, Sarfaraz’s reflections serve as both a reminder of past glory and a source of inspiration for the current team to create new history.
