Emma Heming Willis is opening up about the ongoing emotional toll of caring for husband Bruce Willis, four years after his retirement due to his frontotemporal dementia diagnosis.
The 71-year-old actor was diagnosed in 2023, and last year Heming Willis released a book, The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path, documenting her experience.
Last August, it was revealed that Willis had moved into a separate home down the street from the family’s primary residence, where he now receives round-the-clock care.
In a new interview with Hello!, Heming Willis admitted guilt remains a constant companion in her caregiving journey.
“The reality is that guilt is something I still struggle with daily,” she said.
“When you are a care partner and you have to navigate a situation like this, it’s practically impossible not to feel guilty. But I’ve learned that I can’t allow that feeling to consume me, because it’s a huge waste of time and energy.”
Despite the physical separation, she’s previously said she visits Willis “all the time,” with the family regularly having dinner together several times a week, and Heming Willis often sharing breakfast with him as well.
Much of the interview focused on how she’s navigating the situation with the couple’s daughters, Mabel Ray, 14, and Evelyn Penn, 12.
“It’s a really delicate balance to strike. Guiding them through something like this, through any serious illness, really, is an enormous challenge,” she said.
“But despite how tough things get, I always try to remind myself that it could be so much worse.”
She described what her daughters witness at home as, in its own way, deeply instructive, “Every single day is a masterclass in pure love.”
She credited the wider family and community for surrounding Willis with what she called “a protective ring” of support, adding, “I think there’s something genuinely beautiful about them growing up with that sense of unity. Yes, it’s heartbreakingly hard, but my daughters are learning the true meaning of loyalty, devotion and unconditional love.”
That support network extends to Willis’s three daughters from his marriage to Demi Moore, Rumer, 38, Scout, 35, and Tallulah, 32, along with Moore herself, all of whom remain closely involved.
Heming Willis, married to Willis for 17 years, was candid about the fact that her daughters don’t see her as unshakeable through any of it.
“My daughters have seen me be strong, of course, but they’ve also seen me broken on the floor,” she said.
“At the end of the day, I’m only human. I think they’re very aware that I’m doing the best I can. I’ve never been through this before, I’m learning everything in real time.”
