Miley Cyrus’s attempt to reclaim the top of the pop charts has hit an early snag.
The 33-year-old’s new single Bass Persuades fell off Spotify’s Global 200 chart after just two days on it.
The track debuted at No. 23, dropped sharply to No. 123 on day two, and disappeared from the chart entirely by day three.
Its performance has looked stronger on other platforms. it currently sits at No. 2 on iTunes in the United States and No. 41 on Apple Music’s global top 100, and early predictions have it debuting at No. 13 on the UK’s official chart.
Bass Persuades represents a more mainstream pivot for Cyrus following 2025’s Something Beautiful, a genre-bending passion project that underwhelmed commercially.
It’s also her first release since signing with Atlantic Records after five years with Columbia, where she released Something Beautiful and 2023’s Endless Summer Vacation, the latter of which produced Flowers, the biggest hit of her career.
Before Columbia, Cyrus was signed to RCA, releasing Bangerz, Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz, Younger Now and Plastic Hearts.
The rollout for Bass Persuades suggests Cyrus is aiming for a genuine commercial comeback, backed by a big-budget music video from photographer Mert Alas.
In the clip, a scantily-clad Cyrus struts through a dimly lit dive bar before leading a group of revelers into the streets to dance through the night.
Lyrically, the song leans into a nostalgic, anti-screen-time message, with Cyrus urging younger fans to put their phones away and get on the dance floor, declaring on the repetitive chorus that “the kids don’t want to dance.”

The ’80s-inspired production underscores that yearning for a more analog era, contrasting it with a culture she suggests has become overly “glued” to screens.
Cyrus, who performs live only rarely, has announced two shows at the Hollywood Bowl on October 16 and 18 in support of the album, also titled Bass Persuades, which arrives September 18.
Alongside the album news, she revealed a rebrand, dropping her surname to perform simply as Miley going forward, a decision that’s already earned her father Billy Ray Cyrus’s blessing.
He compared the move to other single-name icons in a social media post: “I always called my little girl Miley. Just … Miley. I told Miley yesterday I felt good about her going with her first name. I mentioned Dolly and Cher. Thinkin about it more and more … Elvis … Prince … and so on.”
He called the shift “a natural progression for an iconic superstar legend,” adding, “And the legend continues! Looking forward to the new album.”
