Jazz legend Cassandra Wilson has passed away at age 70.
The Grammy-winner died on the morning of Tuesday, September 1, in her hometown of Jackson, Mississippi, the Hinds County Coroner Jeramiah Howard confirmed.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Cassandra Wilson, the Grammy Award-winning and legendary jazz artist. Cassandra Wilson transitioned peacefully at home, surrounded by family, close friends, and her manager,” her manager said in a statement to jazz radio station WBGO.
Wilson leaves behind a career defined by a distinctive sound and a willingness to move freely between musical styles. Her genre-bending approach brought together elements of blues-based jazz with folk, pop, R&B, country and other influences.
At the centre of it all was her unmistakable contralto, a soulful voice deeply connected to her Mississippi roots.
Wilson’s talent earned her two Grammy Awards and widespread recognition well beyond the jazz world. In 2001, Time magazine went as far as dubbing her “America’s best singer,” highlighting the impact of an artist who had spent decades challenging expectations of what a jazz vocalist could sound like.
