Andrew Garfield remains firm on bold take on ‘Spider-Man’

Andrew Garfield is standing by a Spider-Man view he first shared more than a decade ago.

The Amazing Spider-Man star remained firm on his idea that the character’s iconic suit should be open to anyone who sees themselves in the superhero.

In a new conversation with Entertainment Weekly ahead of his latest film, The Uprising, the 43-year-old reflected on comments he made back in 2013, questioning why the person behind the Spider-Man mask had to fit one specific identity.

“I just still believe that anyone can be in that suit,” he said.

The Social Network actor explained that part of Spider-Man’s enduring appeal is the idea that audiences can see themselves in the character regardless of their background.

“You don’t see skin color, you don’t see gender, you don’t see sexuality,” he noted. “Anyone can project themselves into that suit.”

Garfield described his original comments as an “exercise in rebellion” that he felt strongly about, adding that he likes the idea of a world in which everyone can feel represented.

“I like the idea of a place where everyone is being honored and everyone is being included,” he said.

The remarks have once again reignited discussion among Spider-Man fans.

Some praised Garfield’s inclusive interpretation while others argue that Peter Parker’s established identity should remain intact and that different versions of the character could explore other perspectives.
