KARACHI: The final postmortem report in the Mir Raza Ali murder case has conclusively ruled out suicide, confirming that the young businessman died as a result of a gunshot wound, the Sindh Police spokesperson announced on Monday.
The investigation team received the final report — compiled following the exhumation of Mir Raza’s body — based on chemical analysis, forensic reports and other evidence.
The spokesperson said the report was being made public in view of progress in the investigation and in the interest of transparency. The investigation team was reviewing the report and would advance the probe in its light.
Mir Raza Ali, an IBA graduate and young businessman, was found dead in Karachi’s Gulistan-e-Jauhar area on July 29, a day after he went missing. His father has consistently maintained that his son was murdered and has rejected suggestions that the death was a case of suicide.
An autopsy found that the young businessman had been shot in the back. As per the medical report, marks of violence were also found on Mir Raza’s body. The report read that black marks were also found on his body, while injury marks were present on his feet. Blood stains were found on tissues in the lower part of his body.
A fracture and injury measuring approximately 12 centimetres in length were identified on Ali’s right thigh, according to the report. The report also found evidence of a deep injury and fracture in the jaw area.
The development came as a judicial commission investigating the alleged murder had already begun proceedings, with Sindh High Court Justice Omar Sial summoning the medico-legal officer, police officials and ambulance drivers during its maiden hearing three days earlier.
Justice Sial expressed condolences to the bereaved family as they appeared before the commission, assuring them that what had happened previously had taken place behind closed doors but that proceedings before the commission would be open and transparent.
“Whatever happens in the judicial commission will be before everyone,” he said. He also pledged not to meet anyone during the commission’s proceedings, saying he would not even meet the Sindh chief minister if he came.
The commission said its role was to identify mistakes rather than conduct investigations, and that it would examine flaws in the investigation, police performance and negligence under its terms of reference.
Mir Raza’s father, mother and sister appeared before the commission, with family lawyer Jibran Nasir also called to the rostrum.
Mir Hussain, the deceased’s father, expressed a lack of confidence in the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding his son’s death. He had consistently maintained that his son was murdered and rejected suggestions of suicide.
His family lawyer, Jibran Nasir, had previously rejected the Sindh government’s decision to form a judicial commission, saying it had been constituted without informing the family.
