Shelley Fabares’s cause of death revealed

Shelley Fabares, the actress beloved for her roles on The Donna Reed Show and Coach, died of pneumonia on August 22 at age 82, her family has confirmed, following a diagnosis of autoimmune hepatitis.

She passed away in Los Angeles surrounded by loved ones, according to a statement shared by her husband, actor Mike Farrell.

Fabares had a complicated health history dating back decades.

In 1999, an emergency room visit for an esophageal bleed revealed she had progressive liver failure, and she underwent a liver transplant in October 2000 after nearly two years on the waiting list.

Reflecting on that period previously, she said: “I was very much aware I was living on borrowed time. The strain was enormous, but there was also a level of acceptance within me.”

There’s no indication her earlier liver issues were connected to her death this year.

Born January 19, 1944, in Santa Monica, Fabares built a decades-long career beginning with guest appearances on 1950s television before landing her breakout role as Mary Stone on The Donna Reed Show, where she also launched a music career with her No. 1 hit Johnny Angel.

She went on to co-star in three films alongside Elvis Presley, and later took on guest roles across shows including The Twilight Zone, Fantasy Island, Mork & Mindy and Newhart, along with a recurring part on One Day at a Time and the role of Brian Piccolo’s wife in the landmark 1971 telefilm Brian’s Song.

Her most beloved role came later, as Christine Armstrong opposite Craig T. Nelson on Coach.

Farrell, 87, was married to Fabares from 1984 until her death, following her earlier marriage to producer Lou Adler from 1964 to 1980.

In his statement, Farrell wrote that he and their family would remember her “for her kindness, loyalty, wit, courage, and beautiful spirit.”
