Sandra Bullock is opening up about one of the hardest chapters of her family’s life, revealing how her children coped while her late partner Bryan Randall battled ALS.
Randall died in August 2023 at 57 after privately living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis for three years.
Bullock, 62, recently reflected on that period during an appearance on the SmartLess podcast, explaining that her children, Louis, 16, and Laila, 12, were fully aware of what was happening.
“Oh, completely aware. Absolutely aware, because eventually, once there is a situation where you’re bedridden, we all have to go there,” she said.
“It was in my house, and I did my best to set up whatever I could, and I am lucky in that I had the means to pay for it.”
Bullock said her children noticed not only Randall’s physical changes but also how the illness affected everyone around him.
“They could see. They have eyes. And, they are very, very astute kids,” she explained.
The Oscar winner said Louis began creating emotional distance about two years before Randall’s death because he recognised the situation was becoming unhealthy for him.
“He’s like, ‘You know what? I’m here for you.’ I didn’t want him to become the man of the family at that age. My job [was] to be both at that time.”
Laila remained closer to Randall for longer, Bullock said, but eventually asked not to be sent to visit him.
“And I said, ‘Absolutely.’ And I said, ‘But, if you do wanna go visit, I will come with you, and I will be right there. And if you tap out, I am right there.’”
Bullock said Randall stayed in another part of the house, allowing her to support him while respecting her children’s boundaries.
