Pakistan loses around 11,000 mothers to childbirth each year, while malnutrition leaves 43% of children stunted.
ISLAMABAD: Federal Health Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal has called for a coordinated national strategy to fight malnutrition and reduce child stunting in Pakistan, warning that the country cannot achieve its health goals without addressing poor nutrition among mothers and children.
Kamal made the remarks during a meeting with Adviser to the Federal Minister for Finance Adnan Pasha in Islamabad. Pasha briefed the health minister on a new initiative focused on improving nutrition and reducing stunting across the country.
Kamal stressed that maternal and child health is closely connected to proper nutrition. He called for nutrition programs to be prioritized and urged officials to develop practical measures to tackle the issue.
The minister said about 11,000 mothers die each year in Pakistan during childbirth, while 43% of children suffer from stunting linked to malnutrition.
Poor nutrition during pregnancy and childhood can affect physical growth and overall development, making early intervention important for long-term health.
“Proper maternal nutrition is the foundation of a healthy child, while healthy children are the foundation of a healthy and strong society,” Kamal said.
He directed officials to prepare clear and practical recommendations to address malnutrition and reduce the country’s stunting rate. He also called for a coordinated approach involving relevant government departments and institutions.
The meeting also focused on developing a strategy that could translate government plans into concrete action. Officials were asked to work together on recommendations aimed at improving nutrition and supporting healthier outcomes for families.
