Taylor Swift is offering fans a look back at the surprising origin story of one of her biggest hits.

In a newly released clip from a Grammy Museum conversation, Swift revealed that I Knew You Were Trouble started out as a completely different song, a stripped-down, melancholic piano ballad, before producers Max Martin and Shellback pushed her toward the genre-bending sound that ultimately defined it.

Swift explained that flipping a song’s emotional register entirely, rather than matching the production to the lyrics’ mood, is a technique she credits largely to working with the two Swedish hitmakers.

“It can either be compelling to make a song sound exactly how it feels or to flip it, which the people that really taught me the most about that are Max Martin and Shellback.”

She singled out Trouble as the clearest example of that philosophy in action, recalling how she originally pitched it to them as a quiet, drum-free ballad.

“I was really excited to bring it in and I played them this really, really sad ballad and I was like I think just no drums and they’re like, ‘What if it’s dubstep?'”

Swift said the pivot ended up transforming the song for the better.

I Knew You Were Trouble appeared on Swift’s 2012 album Red and marked a deliberate stylistic turn toward pop for the singer at the time.

Built around a dubstep-inflected wobble bass and distorted vocals on its chorus, the track became a commercial hit, peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and later winning Best Female Video at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards.
