LOS ANGELES: Shelley Fabares, the beloved actor and singer best known for “Coach and The Donna Reed Show”, died Saturday, Aug. 22, in Los Angeles at age 82, surrounded by her loved ones, as her family and husband, actor Mike Farrell, confirmed her death and colleagues began remembering her lasting impact.
Fabares became a familiar face on American television during the late 1950s and went on to build a career that lasted for decades. She first gained widespread attention as Mary Stone on The Donna Reed Show, which ran from 1958 to 1966 and starred Academy Award winning actress Donna Reed.
Her career later reached another high point with Coach, the ABC sitcom in which she played Christine Armstrong, the wife of Craig T. Nelson’s character. Fabares appeared throughout the show’s nine-season run from 1989 to 1997, becoming one of its most recognizable cast members.
Following news of her death, Nelson paid tribute to his longtime costar, remembering Fabares as an important part of his life both on and off the set.
“Shelley was a great and grand lady… just a rock. I will miss her. She was a foundational part of my life during the run of Coach,” Nelson said in a statement shared with Entertainment Weekly.
Nelson also recalled Fabares warmth and ability to remain supportive even during the hectic atmosphere of television production.
“She always had a smile. She was welcoming in the midst of chaos and always someone I could go to for advice and counsel, not only myself but others as well,” he said.
“I’ll remember you with love, Shelley Fabares.”
Fabares also made her mark on the big screen, appearing alongside Elvis Presley in three films: Girl Happy in 1965, Spinout in 1966 and Clambake in 1967.
Her talents extended beyond acting. In 1962, she reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Johnny Angel,” giving her a major success as a recording artist.
Her family described Fabares as someone who brought love, strength, laughter and comfort to those around her. In a statement shared with media outlets, they said she was a devoted wife, cherished stepmother, family member and loyal friend whose warmth and generosity left a lasting impression.
Fabares death closes a remarkable chapter in American entertainment, but her work on television, film and music along with the memories shared by those who knew her ensures that her legacy will continue to reach audiences for generations.
