Andrew Garfield may love acting, but Hollywood’s never-ending treadmill? Not so much.
The Amazing Spider-Man star has admitted he thinks about leaving the industry “all the time” after spending nearly a year jumping from one project to another.
“I’ve worked a lot this year. I’ve done like 11 months, 12 months, straight back-to-back projects,” Garfield told Variety when asked whether he has ever considered walking away.
He wants audiences to see what he has made — he just isn’t particularly interested in the promotional circus that comes afterward.
“I want people to see those projects, so I’m gonna have to tell people about them. I get that. But if I had my druthers, people would just see them, and I could go whittle wood in the Somerset countryside and think about what the birds might be doing,” he said.
Honestly, that sounds less like retirement and more like a very specific dream vacation.
Garfield also explained that his ambitions have changed. Fifteen years ago, becoming Spider-Man was a major career dream. Now, his goals are much closer to home.
“They’re maybe a bit more philosophical and existential than achievement based. Now I think it’s more I want a certain quality of life. I want a certain quality of relationships with my family and friends. I want a certain quality of relationship with myself,” he said.
This isn’t Garfield’s first brush with “is he retiring?” speculation.
In 2022, he said he was going to “rest for a little bit” and needed to “recalibrate.” He later clarified on The View: “I’m just having a holiday.”
And while fans continue theorizing about another possible Spider-Man return, Garfield seems more interested in something far less complicated: a quiet life, good relationships and maybe some woodwork.
