Lisa Kudrow’s road to Friends wasn’t exactly a straight line — and one of her biggest setbacks may have helped land her the role that changed everything.
Before becoming Phoebe Buffay, Kudrow was fired from the pilot of Frasier.
The actress later took a smaller role on Mad About You, a move that unexpectedly helped pave the way for Friends.
She even had another character in mind when auditioning for the hit sitcom: Rachel Green.
“Idiot that I am, I went, ‘Oh, but you know what? I got to say, Rachel is Jewish. And boy, I love doing a Jewish American Princess. I think I could make that really funny.’ Not even clocking that, ‘Oh no, this is the romantic lead to Ross.’”
Rachel ultimately went to Jennifer Aniston, while Kudrow became Phoebe — and the rest is sitcom history.
But Kudrow’s career didn’t stop at Central Perk. Her HBO series The Comeback, which she co-created with Michael Patrick King, has become one of her most celebrated projects.
With its third and final season earning her another acting Emmy nomination — alongside a writing nomination — Kudrow says the recognition hit differently.
“It’s a highlight, and in some ways, the highlight,” she said. “And then to be acknowledged, holy cow, by your peers, that this is writing that’s worthy of recognition? That made me cry.”
She’s also returning for the Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion sequel, saying, “It felt fun. I don’t know. I trust the director a lot. Tim Federle is directing this one.”
And perhaps the most surprising revelation? Kudrow says Hollywood once told her she wasn’t attractive enough.
“I was told, ‘It’s very hard because you’re not gorgeous, and they want gorgeous.’ And I’m like, ‘Okay’…”
Turns out, “gorgeous” wasn’t required for a 10-season comedy legend.
