Tears for Fears star Curt Smith is hoping to give his childhood football club a new future.
The singer has joined a group that is taking over Bath City, the club from his hometown.
Smith will become an ambassador and wants to help the team move up the football pyramid.
The 65-year-old musician already set his sights high as he hopes Bath City can reach the Football League within the next five or six years and eventually have a stadium that can welcome around 8,000 fans.
The dream, however, is similar to what happened at Wrexham. Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney bought the Welsh club in 2020 when it was playing outside the professional leagues.
Wrexham have since climbed all the way into the Championship.
Smith knows he cannot simply repeat their story.
“I’m no Ryan Reynolds. His level of fame is a lot higher than mine,” he said.
Still, Smith believes he can make a difference. He grew up in Bath and was raised on a council estate, so returning to help the club means a lot to him.
The £6.3 million takeover is being led by businessman Andrew Stalbow.
The group plans to clear Bath City’s debt and put money into the team.
Curt added that the club will grow slowly, with the main goal being to build a strong professional team before trying to go even further.
