One of the most tightly guarded secrets in recent Marvel history is finally out in the open, Sadie Sink’s mysterious role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day has been confirmed as X-Men telepath Jean Grey, following the film’s theatrical release.
Sink, cast in 2025 without her character ever being disclosed, kept the secret through more than a year of press appearances, filming under a decoy codename reportedly used in scripts to protect the reveal.
In the film, Jean is initially framed as a mysterious antagonist, using her powers to possess unsuspecting bystanders and infiltrate the Department of Damage Control, a government agency whose true motives are eventually revealed to be more villainous than her own.
The story draws deliberate parallels between Jean and Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, both isolated, both wrestling with the emotional weight of powers they can’t fully control, while planting hints of the destructive potential that could eventually shape her into the Dark Phoenix in future films.
Reflecting on the secrecy surrounding her casting, Sink described the experience of promoting the film without being able to say what she’d actually filmed, including doing a full day of reference shooting so her co-stars could study how to react to a character only she had fully seen on set.
She called the process fun despite the challenge, noting she’d worked only about 20 days on the project overall, with much of her involvement centered on preproduction and blocking.
Sink is expected to reprise the role in Marvel’s upcoming X-Men reboot, though no casting or release details for that film have been announced.
