Timothee Chalamet had all the fingers pointing at him earlier this year, after his remarks over ballet and opera as a ‘dying art form’ went viral all across social media, but his costar Monica Barbaro believes critics missed the nuance of his comment.
The 36-year-old actress recently responded to the comments during an appearance on Josh Horowitz’s podcast Happy Sad Confused when the host asked if she ever confronted his A Complete Unknown co-star.
Barbaro explained that she didn’t because she can’t know exactly where he was coming from, but did recall him speaking highly of his sister being a dancer.
“He was saying it from a very… ‘hat’s off, respect’ kind of a place,” she said, adding, “I do think audiences are dwindling for those kinds.”
While the Top Gun: Maverick actress has not discussed the matter with the Wonka star, she noted, “I’m a Gemini. I try to see all sides. I would like to not lead with offense.”
Barbaro concluded by saying that it’s ultimately up to Chalamet himself to explain what he meant, saying, “It’s very much his business to express what he did or didn’t mean and why and how he feels.”
