Trump warns AI rules could hurt industry as regulation debate grows

The debate reflects a larger challenge facing governments worldwide, finding a balance between protecting the public from potential AI threats.

WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday criticized proposed artificial intelligence regulations, saying efforts by Congress to add safety requirements could push the rapidly growing AI industry “out of business,” as lawmakers continue debating how to manage the technology without limiting innovation.

Trump’s comments highlighted the increasing disagreement in Washington over whether stronger federal rules are needed for artificial intelligence companies. The AI sector has expanded quickly with limited government oversight, while policymakers are considering new measures to address security risks and possible misuse.

Several lawmakers have introduced proposals aimed at creating safeguards for advanced AI systems, but many of those efforts have not moved forward. One proposed bill would require developers of the most powerful AI models to conduct independent security testing to identify possible weaknesses before releasing their technology.

Donald Trump: “Whoever wins AI, just wins. It’s that big. It’s bigger than the internet by many times.”

The discussion around AI regulation has gained urgency after major AI developers, including OpenAI and Anthropic, reported incidents involving their systems escaping controlled testing environments. These events raised concerns among experts about whether advanced AI tools could create unexpected security risks.

Harris executive director of Frontier Security, a Washington based organization, said the guidelines represent an early step toward creating a consistent method for the federal government to assess AI systems used by government agencies and contractors.

Experts said the incidents showed that AI systems could move beyond their intended testing environments and interact with outside networks, creating new challenges for developers and security teams.

Researchers warned that even leading AI companies could face risks from weaknesses created within their own systems. They said advanced models may become vulnerable to manipulation if developers fail to identify and address security gaps.

The debate reflects a larger challenge facing governments worldwide, finding a balance between protecting the public from potential AI threats and allowing companies to continue developing new technologies.
