HugoBank secures Rs1.5 billion boost ahead of digital launch

ISLAMABAD: The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) has approved the issuance of shares to HugoBank Limited’s sponsor shareholders on August 5, allowing the digital bank to receive a fresh equity investment of Rs1.5 billion.

The move brings HugoBank closer to starting commercial operations as one of Pakistan’s first digital retail banks. The newly approved capital injection will help HugoBank fulfill the State Bank of Pakistan’s (SBP) Minimum Capital Requirement (MCR), which is a mandatory regulatory requirement before beginning full banking services.

HugoBank has already received the SBP’s In-Principle Approval (IPA) to establish a digital retail bank in Pakistan. The bank is being developed through Starlight Holdings (Private) Limited, with its sponsors planning to invest around $60 million in capital and technology resources to build a modern digital banking platform.

The bank is supported by a group of Pakistani and Singaporean investors led by Singapore based Atlas Consolidated, along with the Getz group and Pakistan’s Muller & Phipps.

Unlike traditional banks that operate through physical branches, digital retail banks provide financial services through mobile applications and online platforms, this technology based approach allows customers to access banking services remotely without visiting bank branches.

Experts believe digital banking can help reduce operating costs, improve customer convenience and increase access to financial services for people who remain outside the formal banking system.

HugoBank’s entry is expected to increase competition in Pakistan’s growing digital finance sector, where technology driven solutions are becoming increasingly important.

Industry specialists said digital banks could support financial inclusion by providing easier account registration, faster digital payments, quick money transfers, online savings options and technology-based lending services.

Pakistan has been encouraging digital transformation in the financial sector to improve access to banking facilities, especially for underserved communities and individuals who do not have easy access to conventional banking services.

With its planned technology focused platform, HugoBank aims to introduce new digital banking solutions designed around customer convenience and faster financial services. The bank’s launch will depend on completing remaining regulatory requirements and receiving final approval to begin commercial operations.

The development marks another step in Pakistan’s efforts to expand digital financial services and create a more competitive banking environment through technology based financial institutions.
