Heavy monsoon rains have increased flood concerns across Punjab as authorities step up precautionary measures to protect vulnerable communities, while water levels in most major rivers remain within normal limits.

Officials said low-level flooding has been reported at parts of the Indus River and nearby streams, with several cities facing risks of urban flooding and landslides.

According to the Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), water flows in the Chenab, Jhelum, Ravi, and Sutlej rivers remain normal, while hill torrents in Dera Ghazi Khan are also stable.

Low-level flooding continues at Kalabagh and Chashma points along the Indus River, where water flows have reached 340,000 cusecs and 290,000 cusecs, respectively.

The authority also reported increased water levels in Nallah Deg Kangra, Nallah Basantar, and Bain stream in Shakargarh, Narowal district. Water flow in Nallah Deg Kangra has been recorded at 13,000 cusecs.

PDMA Director General Saif Anwar Jappa warned that cities including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Faisalabad, and Multan remain vulnerable to urban flooding due to continued rainfall.

He added that Murree, Galliyat, and other mountainous areas could face landslide risks as wet weather conditions continue.

The disaster management authority has advised residents living near riverbanks and riverbeds to move to safer locations and follow official safety instructions.

Authorities have established flood relief camps in affected and vulnerable areas, where residents will be provided with shelter, food, medical assistance, and other essential facilities.

Officials said the fourth spell of monsoon rains is expected to continue until August 5, while rainfall in upper catchment areas may increase water flows in eastern rivers and connected streams.

Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from rivers, canals, and streams, and prevent children from entering floodwaters as precautionary measures remain in place.
